Heroes of Newerth (HoN) at DEVASTATION 2011

Hot on the heels of our post about canceling StarCraft II… we are excited to share some good news and finally announce that Heroes of Newerth (HoN) will be added to the official titles at DEVASTATION 2011!

Now, while this may seem to be a hasty replacement for StarCraft II it is, in fact, something we have been working on for the last few months dating back as far as E3. S2 Games, HoN’s developer, and the team at DEVASTATION have been hard at work hammering out the logistics of including a second PC title to the event.

You do remember us announcing our move to the North Building at the Convention Center and taking on 90,000 square feet of space, right?

No!?

Well, let’s jog your memory with a recap here. The point is, HoN has been in the works for quite a while and, even though the announcement happens to come hand-in-hand with the demise of our StarCraft II tournament, know that this title has our full support behind it.

So what ARE we doing?

Our friends at SteelSeries will be providing all the mice, surfaces, keyboards and headsets for the PCs at DEVASTATION but if you want to use your own simply follow the instructions on the Ruleset page and email us your device driver specs.

StarCraft 2 Cancelled for DEVASTATION 2011

With heavy hearts we are announcing the cancellation of the StarCraft 2 tournament at DEVASTATION this year.

Why?! What happened?!

Okay, understand, this decision was made in the best interest of the community.

The eSports industry is still very much in its infancy. We have seen extraordinary growth over the last few years and, as with any growth, comes a measure of pain and one unfortunate pain is that of conflicting events. As the community is litered with independent organizations there is no real singular way for all these events to coordinate their dates with others. Even if there was such a coordination available, it does not mean that every event could accommodate each other and space themselves out in a way to avoid conflict; there are certainly unavoidable situations.

So, as this pertains to us.

In a purely accidental move, IPL3 has been scheduled for the same weekend as DEVASTATION… with a $100,000 StarCraft 2 tournament.

They had no idea that DEVASTATION was that same weekend and had been scheduled since mid-2010.

The teams over at IGN and DEVASTATION have worked tirelessly to find a solution and, in the end, we have decided to drop our SC2 tournament and fully endorse that the StarCraft players attend IPL. To take it a step further, we have blessed our long-time friends from OneMoreGameTV/Live on Three to help with both IPL’s broadcast and the event itself.

While it is unfortunate, know that we harbor no hard feelings towards IGN or its staff; there is no blame to place. We never want to be in the position of forcing the community to choose between events and the single-best way we can support the community in this case is canceling our StarCraft 2 event.

In a very professional sense, we are falling on our sword.

So, where does that leave us at?

  • Anyone that has purchased a ticket and would like refund because of the StarCraft 2 cancellation will absolutely be refunded, no questions asked
  • We fully expect StarCraft 2 to return in 2012
  • We are adding Heroes of Newerth (HoN) as a PC tournament title
  • Look to see some IGN/DEVASTATION collaboration in the future

We hope that everyone sees this cancellation as a positive action on our part; it is truly meant as such.

Beyond Gaming presents the Road to DEVASTATION

Participants will have FOUR chances to compete in a Marvel vs Capcom 3 online tournament between August 31st and September 21.

Each of the four Qualifiers will determine a single winner that will earn the right to compete in a Round Robin Final Tournament September 21st. The winner of the Round Robin will be declared the champion and be sent to DEVASTATION.

1st Qualifier: August 31st
2nd Qualifier: September 5th
3rd Qualifier: September 10th

Madden Monday at the Microsoft Store – Madden NFL Launch

Football is BACK!

DEVASTATION has once again partnered with The Microsoft Store in Scottsdale to bring you the Madden NFL 12 Launch on Monday, August 29th, 2011. The event will start at 9:00 PM and run until midnight with Madden Tournaments and casual play.

Three hours of tournaments and casual matches!

Microsoft Store – Scottsdale Fashion Square

- 9:00 PM until 12:00 AM

Details
- 9:00 PM Registration & Tournament Start
- All games will be played on Xbox 360, of course
- You are welcome (and encouraged) to bring your own controller/pad (we will have Xbox 360 controllers on hand)
- Remember, wireless controllers need to have a play and charge kit plugged in and the batteries removed

Prizes
- 1st Place Winner, a copy of any Xbox 360 game in-stock
- 2nd & 3rd Places, an additional $5.00 off any Pre-Order

General Rules
- Two-Minute Quarters
- Single Game/Match
- Single Elimination
- Pausing the game/round at any time results in an immediate loss of a Game for the offending player
- Hardware macros, rapid-fire/turbo or other hardware assisted mechanisms are forbidden and will result in an immediate disqualification

PIZZA AND REFRESHMENTS!
- Who does not like pizza?!

This time, there will be a LOT more pizza… so no running out fifteen seconds after the doors open.
