This section addresses overall tournament rules, terminology, guidelines, and courtesies. The items outlined below are extremely important, be sure you understand these topics to avoid getting disqualified or ejected. It is assumed that you have read and understand each of these items prior to entering a tournament; ignorance of a rule will not grant you immunity from a potential loss or disqualification.
Attendee
Any one who comes to an event; participation in an event is not a requirement of an Attendee.
Player/Players
A person or team who is actively competing in a tournament.
Team Members
Anyone that is working for the Event.
Tournament Manager
The Team Members that directly manage the brackets and pools and assist the Tournament Director with the progression of the tournaments.
Tournament Director
The Team Member in charge of running tournaments at the Event. He will manage the flow of the brackets as well as manage the Tournament Managers. He is responsible for the final judgement and ruling on all disputes and issues related to tournament games and matches.
Event Director
The individual Team Member responsible for the entirety of the Event.
Tournament Definitions/Terms
Bracket
A diagrammatic representation of games played during the tournament; a chart that outlines a players progression through the tournament.
Single-Elimination
A type of tournament bracket wherein players may only lose one match to be eliminated. There is only one “Side” of the bracket and there is no opportunity to recover from a loss; akin to “Sudden Death” play.
Double-Elimination
A type of tournament bracket wherein players must lose two separate matches to be eliminated. Double-Elimination brackets have both a “Winner’s Side or Bracket” and a “Loser’s Side or Bracket”. Once a player receives his first loss he is moved to the Loser’s Bracket to continue playing. Once a loss is received in the Loser’s Bracket, the player is eliminated from the tournament.
Seeding
A reference to the selective placement of players in a bracket. Seeding may occur based on skill, region or other criteria. DEVASTATION tournament seeds, when applicable, by region only.
Bye
When a tournament does not have players entered in bracket-equal amounts, (i.e., 8, 16, 32, 64, etc.) a number of players will receive an automatic first-round win/pass, called a “bye”. Rarely do byes continue on pass the first round but may depending on the total number of entrants.
Pool/Pools
A smaller bracket than the whole of the tournament. For instance, instead of running a 128-player tournament straight through it may be more feasible to run several smaller brackets that, in turn, seed a 64 player bracket.
Game
A single instance or meeting between two players or teams. In Guitar Hero a game is considered a single song played against another player, in Mortal Kombat, it is when a character is defeated two out of three rounds.
Match
A contest or bout between two players or teams. For our purposes it is when two players or teams are paired against one another in a bracket. Most matches are made up of the winner/best of two out of three games.
Default Selection
A method of choosing a character/team. Players choose their characters/teams in whatever order they choose. Any noticeable delay or stalling to “counter-team” the opposing player can be grounds for disqualification.
Double-Blind Selection
A method of choosing a character/team/race. Players MUST specifically ask for this method of selection prior to either player selecting any characters. Once the Tournament Manager has acknowledged that double-blind will be enforced he will ask a player to whisper their character selection to him. He will then instruct the other player to choose their character/team. Once that player has selected their options he will instruct and insure that the other player chooses the team as so confided to him.
Stalling
Stalling is intentional act of making the game unplayable and/or continuing. Examples of this include game-breaking glitches such as characters leaving the screen, stepping outside the normal boundaries of a map, time freezes and game resets. Intentional stalling will be grounds for a disqualification and, as this is a subjective determination, be aware of the actions you are taking while playing and avoid even the perception of stalling.
General Rules
Match Rules
- Unless Double-Blind Selection is specifically requested BEFORE any player chooses a character, all matches will be played in the Default Selection.
- If players cannot agree on a side/controller ports to begin a Match, a two out of three (2/3) Rock! Paper! Scissors! Match will be played, with the winner choosing the side/ports
- The loser of a Match can opt to switch side/port with the winner if they choose. The winner must stay where he is at unless the loser requests otherwise.
- Winners of the last game must keep characters/teams/orders/settings unless Game Specific rules allow otherwise.
- Losers of the last game may change characters/teams/orders/settings unless Game Specific rules state otherwise.
Starting a Game
- Players will not start a Game until they have been directed to do so by a tournament manager
- Any Games that have been started without the consent of a tournament manager will be stopped and restarted from the beginning
Player Settings and Button Configurations
- Players must check button configurations and settings, such as inverted view, prior to the start of the match
- Once a game is started, pausing/stopping the game to change settings will result in an immediate disqualification, see Pausing a Game
BYOC (Bring Your Own Controller)
IMPORTANT!
- You must bring and use any controller, arcade stick, guitar or other peripheral you need to compete in a game at DEVASTATION
- DEVASTATION is not responsible for supplying players with controllers, arcade sticks, guitars or other peripherals and may do solely at their own discretion
Wireless Controllers
Xbox 360
- You must bring and use a Play and Charge Kit (wired connection) with your controller
- You must remove your batteries/battery pack from your controller, leave it at your house or in your car
- If you leave batteries/battery pack in your controller and pause any game, accidentally or purposefully, you will be removed from the event
PS3
- You must bring and use a PS3 USB connector while playing
- After your match you must use go into the PS3 menu and turn off your controller and use a desyncing station to unsync your PS3 controller from the previous console
- If you do not desync your controller and pause any game, accidentally or purposefully, you will be removed from the event
Pausing a Game
Under no circumstances is a player allowed to pause a game once it has started. Pausing a game at any point during a game results in an immediate loss/disqualification for the offending player. Note: it is only a game that is lost, not an entire match.
If, your controller/arcade stick breaks or malfunctions during a match and causes the game to pause you will be in violation and receive a loss. Equipment failure is not an excuse for pausing a game. You can, of course, replace the equipment at the end of your game but not until that point.
If you notice that you have selected the wrong character, assist type, map or stage or that your controller is malfunctioning you MUST notice the Tournament Manager BEFORE the game starts.
Ties & Draw Games
No ties. Ever. Also, no refusal to play. Refusal to play in any game or match is grounds for disqualification and loss of winnings/place.
In the event that a Game ends in a tie or draw the Game will be played again with the same settings unless specifically outlined in the Game Specific Rules.
In the event of a second tie or draw, a Tournament Manager may allow the players to play another Game or direct the players to play a Rock! Paper! Scissors! Match to determine the winner.
Availability
If you are unavailable when your match is called you may be disqualified.
Rule Violations
There may come a time during the tournament where a rule is broken, intentionally or not. Say the winner of a round changes his character to another or someone pauses the game in the middle of a match. Here is how such events are addressed:
- It is the players’ responsibility to report all violations.
- A Tournament Manager may report a violation on behalf of any player.
- Reports must be made at the time the violations are made; you cannot address one after the match has completed for instance.
- Stopping a game for non-violations is grounds for disqualification.
Rule Enforcement
Occasionally stuff goes wrong. Whether intentionally or not, a rule may get violated. In all instances of rule violation, the Tournament Manager involved, and/or the Tournament Director and Event Director, will discuss the situation and assess the appropriate action. The action may be a verbal warning to a game or match forfeiture all the way up to disqualification or ejection from the Event.
Deus Ex Machina
The Event Director reserves the right to alter/change/delete/create new rules at any time, as well as remove any Team Member, player or attendee for any reason.
